We have flown Scoot round trip between Narita and Taipei twice. Both were 3-night, 4-day trips.

The first was in August 2025, as a family of four (our two kids were then in sixth and fourth grade). The second was in July 2026, as six people across three generations: the two of us, our two kids and two grandparents.

Scoot airlines review: two flights to Taipei, as a family of four and as three generations

After flying twice

Neither flight was delayed, and the grandparents had no complaints. Online check-in did not work the second time.

Seats for the family of four

On the family-of-four trip, we booked without seat selection. Even so, all four of us were seated side by side.

The seats had plenty of room. I felt they were no worse than JAL or ANA.

Seats for the six of us

On the three-generation trip, we were split into two rows of three on the flight home. Narita to Taipei takes about 3 hours 40 minutes.

Because it is a short flight, the grandparents had no complaints about the seats either.

Why we did not choose ScootPlus

On both trips, we did not add ScootPlus. We did add checked baggage.

It is a short flight, so we thought regular seats would be fine. The seat size did not bother us.

ScootPlus did not seem worth the price to us. We wanted checked baggage, but we did not need seat selection.

Scoot online check-in: the time it did not work, and the kiosk at Narita

Scoot web check-in is open from 48 hours to 1 hour 30 minutes before departure.

Scoot’s website says bookings made on third-party travel sites such as Expedia are also eligible. Travelers with infants, pregnant travelers and multi-city bookings are not eligible (as of September 2026).

Web check-in said it was “not available” (July 2026)

For the three-generation trip, we booked the flights on Agoda together with the hotel. When we entered our booking number and last name in Scoot web check-in, this message appeared.

The message telling us to check in at the airport (the screen was in Japanese).

In Agoda’s chat, we were told that online check-in was not open on Scoot’s website either, and were asked to check with Scoot directly.

Agoda’s reply in the chat.

We never found out why it did not work. Scoot says bookings from third-party travel sites are eligible, so we cannot say it was “because we booked on Agoda.”

We checked in all six of us at a self-service kiosk at Narita

Narita kiosks and cut-off times

From Scoot’s official information as of September 2026:

  • Available only for flights to Singapore and Taipei
  • From 4 hours to 65 minutes before departure
  • Airport counters close 60 minutes before departure
  • Boarding gates close 15 minutes before departure

Checked in on the phone, but told to “go to the counter” (August 2025)

For the family of four, we booked on Expedia and could check in on our phones. But the outbound boarding pass said “please proceed to the counter.”

Scoot mobile boarding pass (in Japanese): under check-in complete, it says to proceed to the counter and that the mobile boarding pass cannot be used at the destination

The boarding pass for the return from Taipei said “Scoot-to-Gate available.” That lets you go straight to immigration without stopping at the counter.

About Scoot-to-Gate

Scoot’s official mobile boarding pass FAQ says Scoot-to-Gate is currently unavailable.

This is due to enhanced security measures, and passengers are asked to check in at the airport counter (as of September 2026).

Scoot food and outside drinks: we could not drink the water we bought

Meals on Scoot are paid.

Scoot’s official food and drink rule (as of September 2026)

Please refrain from consuming food and drinks brought from outside on board. (Our translation of the wording on Scoot’s Japanese website.)

The water we had bought

We did not order any meals. We had bought water to drink after landing in Taipei, but it felt awkward on board, so we did not drink it.

Scoot in-flight Wi-Fi: prices, and how the kids passed the time

Videos for the kids

We did not use the in-flight Wi-Fi. We downloaded Amazon Prime videos before the flight and let the kids watch those.

Scoot baggage: 10 kg carry-on, and adding checked bags meant no trouble

According to Scoot’s baggage page, carry-on is up to 2 pieces, 10 kg in total. This is for Economy (as of September 2026).

  • Carry-on bag: 54 cm × 38 cm × 23 cm (total of three sides 115 cm or less)
  • Personal item: 40 cm × 30 cm × 10 cm or less (under the seat in front)

Checked bags we added

Our fares did not include checked baggage, so we added it.

TripChecked bags we added
Family of fourOne 25 kg bag each way (JPY 4,900 per bag)
Three generations, six peopleThree 20 kg bags, for three passengers

On both trips we had no trouble with baggage. If you are paying by weight anyway, the lighter the suitcase itself, the more you can pack. Our suitcases are covered in our article on choosing Samsonite over RIMOWA (in Japanese).

Scoot delays and a late-night arrival: no delays either time, and the grandparents were fine arriving at 23:55

Neither flight was delayed.

The wing and the sea from the airplane window (August 2025).

On the three-generation trip, we took the night flight arriving in Taipei at 23:55. From the airport we used a car we had booked in advance.

The grandparents could get moving right away, so they had no complaints. We reached the hotel at about 2 a.m.

How we handled the late-night arrival day and booked the transfer is in our 4 days in Taipei itinerary with kids and elderly parents.

Scoot prices: JPY 123,647 for a family of four, JPY 335,132 for six

Comparing the two trips

The dates and the number of people were different, so the two totals cannot be compared directly.

The full cost of the trip, including the hotel and spending in Taipei, is in our Taipei 3-night, 4-day cost article (in Japanese).

The conditions of both bookings (how passengers were counted, checked bags and so on) are also in the table in our article comparing Agoda and JTB (in Japanese).

Scoot cancellations and changes

We did not change or cancel either booking.

Is Scoot a good airline? Common complaints, and what applied to us

When you search for Scoot reviews, the same complaints come up again and again.

Common complaintOur two trips
DelaysNo delays either time
Cramped seatsPlenty of room. The grandparents had no complaints on a short flight
You cannot eat or drink your own food on boardScoot also asks passengers to refrain. We did not drink our water
Strict baggage rulesWe had added checked bags, so no trouble
Online check-in does not workIt did not work the second time; we checked in all six at a kiosk at Narita

Even the time online check-in did not work, the airport kiosk took care of it. It did not become a big problem (Find a place to stay on Agoda).

Is Scoot airlines safe? 7 out of 7 on AirlineRatings

Two round trips are not enough to judge an airline’s safety, so here is a third-party rating. AirlineRatings gives Scoot 7 out of 7 stars for safety. The rating covers IOSA registration (IATA’s operational safety audit), fatal accidents in the last 10 years, pilot-related incidents, operating safety standards and EU flight bans (checked on October 4, 2026; the page does not show when the rating was given).

What we can add from our own trips: two Narita–Taipei round trips, no delays either time, and no complaints from the grandparents.
