If you were about to book on Agoda, searched “is Agoda legit” and stopped, this is for you.
Our family has used Agoda about 10 times for family trips: Hong Kong, Okinawa, Taipei and Bangkok. It has been cheap lately, so we use it often.
Even so, we ran into trouble three times. In this article I write what happened each time, how much we lost, and how we prevent it now.
Is Agoda legit and safe? About 10 bookings, and we were never left without a room
Our answer: “It is legit. But we do not stop at clicking ‘book’.”
In about 10 bookings, we have never arrived to find we could not stay. On the other hand, we ran into trouble three times.
| What happened | When | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| The booking did not go through | May and June 2026 (twice) | We rebooked right away and stayed |
| The unused outbound flight was not refunded | August 2026 (Bangkok) | JPY 67,608 was not refunded (it was a non-refundable budget fare) |
| I could not log in with my own email address | — | The chatbot found the booking for me |
Of these, only the two failed bookings were caused on Agoda’s side. The flight was down to the fare conditions, and the login problem was down to our own settings. We have never had trouble with the steps for cancelling a hotel.
Agoda problems: the three that happened to us
Twice, the booking did not go through
After you press the book button, both the screen and the email sometimes say “processing.” It happened to us three times.
| When we booked | Destination | Result |
|---|---|---|
| February 2025 | Hong Kong | Confirmed in a few minutes |
| May 2026 | Bangkok (August trip) | Failed and cancelled → rebooked |
| June 2026 | Taipei (July trip) | Failed and cancelled → rebooked 4 minutes later, confirmed |
Both failures were when we booked the hotel and flights together. So far, a hotel-only booking has never failed for us.
Every result came within a few minutes. For Taipei, as soon as I noticed the cancellation email, I rebooked the same hotel, the same dates and the same room. The price was the same, and it did not become a double booking.

The wording of the emails we received, and where to check whether a booking is confirmed, are written up here.

JPY 67,608 for an outbound flight we did not take
This was our Bangkok trip in August 2026. Because of our son’s school club activities, my wife and he had to join us later.
The ZIPAIR outbound tickets we had booked on Agoda were non-refundable, non-cancellable and non-changeable. For my wife’s and son’s two outbound seats plus checked baggage, JPY 67,608 was not refunded. They bought new outbound tickets on Thai Airways for JPY 90,540. That made JPY 158,148 on flights alone.
What worried us most was whether skipping the outbound flight would also cancel the return.
Our first inquiry to Agoda did not get us an answer. The second time, we asked specifically: “We do not want a refund; we want to keep the return flight.” That revealed that the outbound and return were under separate booking numbers, and Agoda confirmed in writing that the return could be used. To be safe, we also checked with ZIPAIR at Narita Airport, and all four of us flew home together.

I could not log in with my own email address
I had booked with the Mac’s feature for hiding my email address still turned on, so Agoda had a forwarding address on file. The confirmation emails still reached my own inbox, so I did not notice.
Later, when I wanted to look at the booking, I could not log in with my own address. That time, I gave the chatbot my name and booking ID, and it told me right away.

Agoda reviews: why the reputation is bad, and what has not happened to us
When you look up Agoda reviews, you find comments like “When I got to the hotel, there was no reservation” and “Contacting them got nowhere.”
You booked, but the hotel has no reservation. If that happens, it is Agoda’s problem. In our roughly 10 bookings, it has never happened.
That does not mean it cannot happen.
Even with our two failed bookings, if we had missed the cancellation email, we might have left for the trip with a booking that never went through. We noticed only because we watched the screen until the confirmation email came.
With inquiries, too, our first attempt got no answer. The second time, writing specifically what we wanted to do moved things forward. Our experience is that how you ask changes the result.
Avoiding Agoda problems: message the hotel after you book
After booking on Agoda, we do these three things.
- Check that a confirmation email with a booking ID has arrived. A “processing” email only means the request was received; it is not a confirmation
- Send the hotel a message. Using the messaging feature after booking, we check that the reservation has reached the hotel. We also tell them our arrival time, the number of people and any room requests
- Keep the hotel’s reply. You can show it if there is a mix-up when you arrive
Asking the hotel directly tells you whether the reservation has reached them. You can pass on your requests at the same time, so it does two jobs at once.

It was not Agoda’s fault: the JPY 67,608 was a budget-fare condition
On the Bangkok trip, we changed both the hotel and the flights at the same time. Whether we got money back was completely different.
| Hotel | Flights (ZIPAIR) | |
|---|---|---|
| What we did | Reduced the guests from four to two, and also cancelled a booking | My wife and son did not use their outbound flight |
| Money back | For the cancelled booking (Berkeley Pratunam), the full JPY 62,757 was back on the card the same day | JPY 0 (the JPY 67,608 was not refunded) |
| Why it differed | It was a cancellable plan | It was a non-refundable, non-cancellable, non-changeable budget fare |
| Process | Nothing confusing on the screen | Two inquiries, plus checking at the airport |
The JPY 67,608 was not lost because we bought on Agoda. Some budget airfares charge a cancellation fee from the start, or cannot be cancelled at all. The fare we took was one of those.
That is why we keep using Agoda. It has been cheap lately, so we use it often. But from now on, we will compare not only the fare but also when the kids’ schedules will be fixed and the cancellation terms before we book.

Who Agoda suits, and who it does not
| Suits | Does not suit |
|---|---|
| You want overseas hotels cheaply | You want any problem solved with one phone call |
| After booking, you can check the confirmation email and confirm with the hotel yourself | You want Japanese ryokan, trains and rental cars all booked together |
We do not book everything on Agoda either.
- For Taipei in August 2025, we booked on Expedia (flights + hotel, JPY 196,027). Compared with Agoda, JTB and Rakuten Travel, Expedia was the cheapest on the day we booked. When we later checked the same dates on Agoda, it was JPY 174,614. Age categories differ, so it is not a simple comparison, but the cheapest site changes depending on the day you look → Agoda or Expedia: which is cheaper for a family trip? (in Japanese)
- Domestic trips in Japan where we booked a sightseeing train, the inn and a rental car together were booked with JTB (Kyushu, Shikoku, San’in, Niigata, Tohoku, Izu and Okinawa) → JTB vs. Agoda compared (Taipei and Japan) (in Japanese)
