When you plan a family trip or a multi-generational trip, your biggest question is probably “Where can I book that’s cheap and safe?” Even for the same hotel and the same flights, prices can differ by tens of thousands of yen depending on the booking site. I’ve taken many family trips, both overseas and within Japan. When I compared sites, the Agoda and Expedia packages came out cheaper for the dates, number of people, and room conditions in this comparison. They aren’t always the cheapest, though, so always compare the total on the final screen and the cancellation terms. Based on my own experience, this article explains how to book without mistakes, even when traveling with kids or with three generations. It also covers what to check in advance to prevent trouble, plus some handy example requests. After reading it, you should be able to book your next family trip “cheaply” and “with peace of mind.”

Agoda vs Expedia: Key Differences and When to Use Each

Here’s the answer up front. Neither one is cheaper across the board. It depends on the hotel and the dates.

However, on one of our family’s bookings, Agoda came out JPY 21,413 cheaper.

Taipei, 3 nights/4 days · family of 4Total
Expedia (booked June 28, 2025 · the amount we actually paid)JPY 196,027
Agoda (checked July 17, 2025)JPY 174,614

The flights, dates, and hotel are all the same. Agoda’s screen also showed the same Scoot flight times.

Still, the conditions aren’t completely identical. The day we bought and the day we checked are 3 weeks apart. LCC fares move.

The room type on Agoda’s screen was “Family Triple Room.” I haven’t confirmed whether it’s the same room we actually stayed in.

The actual trend

From using both, my impression is that each one is strong with different hotels. So I open both and line them up under the same conditions.

What I compare is the total on the final screen and the cancellation terms. The displayed price alone doesn’t settle it.

For the same 3-night/4-day Taipei trip, the JTB and Agoda quotes differed by about JPY 160,000 (JTB JPY 334,740 · Agoda JPY 174,614). A separate article covers this comparison, including differences in conditions such as how ages are counted. → JTB vs Agoda: a JPY 160,000 difference on a 3-night/4-day Taipei family trip (in Japanese)

  • Hong Kong family trip (4 adults) We booked “Nina Hotel Tsuen Wan West” on Agoda. It was JPY 20,000 cheaper than other sites, and airport transfers could be arranged as part of the package. Guidebooks don’t cover the area where “Nina Hotel Tsuen Wan West” is located, but the hotel is a great pick and I recommend it: · 20 minutes by taxi from Hong Kong Disneyland · a local market where you can experience a different culture · a direct connection to a train station, putting Tsim Sha Tsui and other areas 20 minutes away · 5-star quality at a low priceAgoda hotel search

The price examples in this article are records from the time our family compared. The difference won’t necessarily be the same for other dates or group sizes.

What Our Family Actually Paid (Flights + Hotel)

Quote comparisons alone probably don’t give you a real feel for the amounts. Here’s what we actually paid.

The Taipei quote above and the first row of this table are the same trip. Below I explain why the amounts differ.

We compared before booking and went with Expedia, which was the cheapest that day. Here’s the sequence.

June 28, 2025After comparing with Agoda, JTB, and Rakuten Travel, we booked with Expedia, which was the cheapest. Flights + hotel: JPY 196,027
July 17, 2025To write this article, I checked JTB and Agoda under the same conditions
ResultAgoda’s package was JPY 174,614

On the day we booked, Expedia was the cheapest, but about 3 weeks later Agoda was roughly JPY 20,000 cheaper (See Cosmos Hotel Taipei prices on Agoda). The age categories differ, so this isn’t a straight comparison. Still, it shows that the ranking can flip for the same trip depending on the day you check.

For our next trip, with three generations and 6 people, we compared again and then booked with Agoda.

Compare before you book. For overseas trips, our family always checks both Agoda and Expedia and books with whichever is cheaper. For trips within Japan, we also check JTB and Rakuten Travel.

Note that I didn’t save each site’s screens from the day we booked (June 28). The only screens I have are from the 2 sites I checked on July 17: JTB and Agoda.

Among the sites I checked on July 17, Agoda had the lowest price with flights included for these dates and this hotel. I didn’t check every other site.

Even for the same Taipei trip, going from 4 people to 6 brings the cost to nearly 2.5 times as much. Each article lists the full breakdown.

Choosing an Airline for a Multi-Generational Trip (JAL/ANA vs LCC)

On a multi-generational trip, you should put “the grandparents’ peace of mind” first.

  • Traveling with grandparents → JAL/ANA · Thorough Japanese-language support from check-in to boarding gives peace of mind · Problems after arrival are also handled smoothly
  • Couple + 2 elementary schoolers → LCCs are an option too · Cebu: Philippine Airlines (full service at close to LCC prices) · Hong Kong: HK Express · Taipei: Scoot

From experience: as a couple with 2 elementary schoolers, we’ve flown LCCs with no major problems.

Our experience flying Scoot to Taipei twice is written up in our Scoot review.

Example Requests to Send the Hotel After Booking

The “post-booking messaging feature” on Agoda and Expedia is handy.

For a worry-free stay, it’s a good idea to request the following.

  • For multi-generational trips · “I have bad knees, so please give us a room that requires little walking.” · “Do you lend wheelchairs?” · “We’d like connecting rooms.” · “Please put our rooms close to each other.” · “A non-smoking room, please.”
  • For trips with kids · “A bed guard, please.” · “We’d like a humidifier.”

The messages stay on record. However, requests are not guaranteed, so save your booking confirmation and cancellation terms as well.

Real example: I requested a bathtub and we got a room with one (August 2026, Bangkok). This is a case where the feature actually worked.

Our room at the hotel for the first half of the trip had no bathtub. That was fine for 3 nights, but by the second half of the trip I wanted a proper soak in a tub.

So before moving to the next hotel, I sent the hotel a “bathtub requested” message through Agoda’s messaging feature.

The room we were actually given had a bathtub and a separate shower booth.

There’s a caveat, though. According to the hotel’s official FAQ, the room type we booked is not listed as a room with a bathtub. In other words, this time “the request went through”; the bathtub wasn’t guaranteed as part of the room type.

A request is only a request. If a bathtub is a must, it’s safer to choose a room type the hotel officially lists with a bathtub, or to ask the hotel whether they can guarantee one.

Even so, sending a request costs nothing. “If you ask, it sometimes works out” is, in my view, a practical benefit of using Agoda (See Mövenpick Sukhumvit 15 prices on Agoda). The full story is in our Mövenpick Sukhumvit 15 stay review (in Japanese).

Checkpoints to Avoid Agoda and Expedia Booking Trouble

Media reports say Agoda has “a lot of booking trouble,” but in practice most of it can be solved by checking in advance.

Message the hotel to confirm right after booking

A plan with free cancellation gives you peace of mind

Real example: inquiries move forward when you “make the point specific” (August 2026, ZIPAIR). This approach actually worked when I contacted Agoda.

We had booked round-trip flights for our family of 4, but before departure 2 of us could no longer take the outbound flight. What I wanted to know was “If those 2 don’t take the outbound flight, will their return flight still be valid?”

The first reply said, in effect, “non-refundable, non-cancellable, non-changeable.” As a statement of the ticket’s terms, that was accurate.

On reflection, that reply made sense. If you only write “we won’t take the outbound flight,” it’s natural to read it as a refund or cancellation request. My question wasn’t clear enough.

So I sent it again and spelled out the point: “I’m not asking whether a refund is possible. Please confirm whether the return booking will be kept even if the outbound flight isn’t used.”

After that, the investigation changed. They confirmed that in this booking, the outbound and return flights had separate airline booking references. They also followed up with the airline through their partner agency.

In other words, if you make your question specific, they’ll look into the details of your booking.

Here are 2 practical tips.

  • Say what you are not asking, too. If it isn’t about a refund, state that explicitly
  • State the outcome you want. If you go as far as writing “We want all 4 of our family to use the return flight,” they’ll understand what to look into

This works not just with Agoda but with inquiries to OTAs and airlines in general. When the first reply misses the point, it’s faster to make your question more specific than to start doubting the terms.

The full story is in my record of not taking a ZIPAIR outbound flight (in Japanese). Note that what happens to the return flight when the outbound flight isn’t used depends on each booking’s terms. Don’t skip the outbound flight on your own judgment. Always confirm with the site you booked through and with the airline.

Summary

  • Traveling with grandparents → buy peace of mind with JAL/ANA
  • Couple + elementary schoolers → LCCs are an option too
  • Compare Agoda × Expedia → Agoda is cheaper in most cases
  • Send requests directly to the hotel for peace of mind
  • Under these conditions, JTB was more expensive. However, this comes from a single quote. With different dates, group sizes, or conditions, the result can reverse.

For overseas multi-generational trips and trips with kids, smart booking can save you hundreds of thousands of yen.
